Today is the second and closing day of the Stampede Powwow at the Saddledome, one of the most talked-about additions to this year’s schedule. World-class Indigenous dancers and drummers from across North America are competing in full traditional regalia, and admission is free with regular Stampede Park entry no extra ticket required. If you missed yesterday’s session, today is your last chance this year, so it’s the single best reason to head to the grounds this afternoon rather than tomorrow.
Rodeo and Evening Show, Same as Every Day (For Good Reason)
Dieter Rams
The World’s Largest Outdoor Rodeo runs its usual daily slot at 1:30 p.m., with competitors continuing to jockey for position ahead of Championship Sunday. In the evening, the three-part Stampede Evening Show Rangeland Derby chuckwagon races, ENMAX relay races, and the Grandstand Show kicks off at 7:15 p.m., now featuring a reworked production this year with Alberta act High Valley and the Young Canadians, plus a heavier pyrotechnics finish. It’s mid-week, which historically means shorter lines than the weekend crush, making today a genuinely good day to go if you’ve been putting it off.
What Else Is Buzzing
The midway, food vendors, and agriculture exhibits are all running full daytime-to-midnight hours, and downtown is still riding the general Stampede wave — patios with western specials, office bunting, and the last stretch of community pancake breakfasts before the festival wraps this weekend. Concert-wise, the city’s satellite music tents continue their run alongside the official Stampede lineup, with the Cowboys Music Festival at Cowboys Park still going through the week.

Looking two days ahead, basketball fans are already buzzing about Surge 2 Stampede on July 9, when the Calgary Surge play a home game at the Saddledome as part of Stampede programming — tickets are moving, so it’s on a lot of local radars even today.
One Practical Note
City officials have flagged ongoing caution around the Bow and Elbow Rivers this season due to elevated water levels from snowmelt if a river outing is on your list today, check current advisories before you go anywhere near a raft or paddleboard.
The Takeaway
If you can only carve out one Calgary outing today, make it the Powwow it’s free, it’s the last day, and it’s widely considered one of the most meaningful events of the whole Stampede run. Everything else rodeo, evening show, midway will still be there tomorrow, but today’s Powwow session won’t be.
